C.J. Jones’ one-man show is a brief, mostly enjoyable sojourn through his life as a deaf African-American. Jones’ parents were both deaf, and he was the only one of his siblings similarly afflicted, a situation that makes for some very endearing moments, like his boxer father attempting to “roll call” his children, and who constantly tells his son, “You’re better than the hearing.” Jones relates his experiences at the Missouri School of the Deaf, where he and his pals played a horrendous practical joke, and frequently clashed with the stern couple who ran the place. Not wanting to be stuck selling shoes, he opts for college, obtains a business degree and gradually makes his way into the world of standup comedy and acting. Jones is a great storyteller, and his impish expression and demeanor — that of a hapless practical joker — overcome some of the bland material. Paul Raci does a masterful job narrating and mimicking voices. Stephen Rothman directs. Deaf West Theater, 5112 Lankershim Blvd., N.
